Every Golden Circle Tour With Laugarás Lagoon, Compared

The Same Three Stops, Then the Water

Every one of these tours runs the standard Golden Circle loop before it turns off for the lagoon. Þingvellir National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site sitting in the rift where the North American and Eurasian plates pull apart, and it is where the Alþingi, one of the world's oldest parliaments, was founded in 930. Geysir is the geothermal field the word geyser comes from; the original Geysir itself is mostly dormant, so what you watch is Strokkur, which erupts every 5 to 10 minutes. Gullfoss drops a combined 32 metres in two tiers into a canyon and throws up enough spray to make rainbows on a sunny day.

All four run 9.5 to 10 hours door to door, all four leave in the morning and return to Reykjavík in the evening, and all four carry free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead with nothing paid at booking. None of them will take a child under 8, because the lagoon will not.

The lagoon itself is 94 km from Reykjavík at Skálholtsvegur 1, 806 Selfoss, which is 26 minutes from Geysir and 36 minutes from Gullfoss, close enough that adding it costs the itinerary very little driving. BusTravel Iceland, the One That Includes the Ticket

At $202.96 this is the cheapest of the four and the only one that names the admission tier it buys you: Lerki, which covers entry, a towel and one drink at the swim-up bar. Nothing is left to pay at the door. On the others you arrive with entry covered but a towel to rent at ISK 1,200 unless you packed one.

It runs as a small group in a minibus with WiFi, collects from 23 points around Reykjavík, and publishes its stop times, which not every operator does: 40 minutes at Þingvellir, 70 at Geysir with the lunch break inside it, 40 at Gullfoss and two hours at the lagoon. The rating is 4.6 from only 6 reviews, which is thin. This is a new product on a new lagoon, and every listing here has the same problem.

Glaciers and Waterfalls, the One With Lunch in a Greenhouse

This one costs $208 and holds the best rating of the four: 5.0 from 15 reviews. What it adds is an hour at Friðheimar, a working tomato greenhouse where you eat among the vines: tomato soup and a bread buffet, with pasta, tortillas and tomato drinks if you want more than soup. The farm is ten minutes north of the lagoon, so it slots into the route without stretching the day.

It also runs a slightly fuller itinerary than the rest: 40 minutes at Þingvellir, 30 at Geysir, 30 at Gullfoss, an hour at Friðheimar and two hours at the lagoon, with a scenic drive past Laugarvatn between them. If you were going to eat lunch anyway, the greenhouse is the most interesting way to do it on this road, and it makes the $5 gap over BusTravel look small, until you remember the towel.

ICELANDIA, the Coach, and the Widest Drop-Off Net

At $220.16 for 9.5 hours, this is the big-coach option: certified English-speaking guide, WiFi, and 31 drop-off locations across Reykjavík, which is more than anyone else offers. It meets at the BSÍ Bus Terminal rather than collecting from hotel doors, so check the meeting point before you book if you are staying outside the centre.

One detail from its own itinerary is worth knowing: it can run the lagoon first and the Golden Circle after, rather than the other way round. Reviewers report both orders. Arriving at the water before the sights means an empty lagoon in the morning and a wet swimsuit in your bag for the rest of the day. Some people would take that trade every time.

Magic Iceland Travel, Guided in Mandarin, and Two Stops Nobody Else Makes

The most expensive at $234.27 and the only one guided entirely in Mandarin, with Chinese-speaking customer service handling the pick-up from 42 listed points. It is also the only one that visits Brúarfoss, the small turquoise waterfall on the Brúará, and the Kerið crater with its red rim and blue lake.

The trade is the water: one hour at the lagoon instead of two, on the Birki pass, which means entry only. An hour covers the upper pool, the walk down behind the waterfall and one sauna round if you move. It does not cover a meal at Ylja, the restaurant on site. Read the Admission Line Before the Price

The lagoon sells three tiers and the tour operators buy different ones. Birki is entry, locker and toiletries. Lerki adds a towel and one drink at the swim-up bar. Ösp adds a two-course meal at Ylja and has to be reserved in advance, which is why no day tour includes it. The kitchen holds a table and a coach cannot promise a time.

Only BusTravel names its tier. Where a listing says entry is included without saying which admission, assume Birki and pack a towel. The rental costs ISK 1,200, about $10, and so does a swimsuit if you forget that too.

Two Hours Is the Allowance, Not the Minimum

Two hours is enough for the pools, the waterfall stair and one round of sauna and cold plunge, without hurrying. It is not enough to eat at Ylja, where swimwear is not allowed and you would need to dress, sit down and be finished before the coach leaves. If eating there matters, drive yourself and buy the ticket alone.

Everyone showers without swimwear before entering, standard in every Icelandic pool, and the staff do enforce it. There are semi-private stalls as well as open showers. The minimum age is 8 and 8- to 15-year-olds need an adult with them, which is stricter than the Blue Lagoon's floor of 2 and looser than Sky Lagoon's 12.

One more thing the reviews keep raising: in winter the daylight runs out during the drive. A December departure sees Gullfoss in flat grey light and reaches the lagoon after dark. It is a different day from the same tour in July, and worth choosing deliberately rather than discovering.

Or Skip the Tour and Drive

If you have a car, the sums change. The entry ticket alone starts at ISK 6,900, about $56, against $203 and up for a seat on a bus. The drive is 94 km of paved road from Reykjavík, roughly 1 hour 20 minutes, with free parking outside the entrance and no F-roads or fords anywhere on the route.

What you lose is the guide and the option of a drink at the bar. What you gain is your own slot, and the last two hours before closing, which is when the place empties out, are not something a day tour can offer you.
